On a Forbes SportsMoney podcast in March Celtics Managing Partner, Governor and Chief Executive Officer Wyc Grousbeck talked to Mike Ozanian about the impact of technology on the sports industry in general and his intent to join the NBA 2K eLeague.
Here’s a great quote a from the podcast:
“The Celtics will be opting in. There will be an eCeltics. We will find players, we will compensate these players. We’ll house them in Boston. They’ll be a team. They will train. There’s training for this. And then we’ll go compete against the other NBA teams in 2K…We will stream these matches.”
Wyc Grousbeack clearly understands that this is big business and the specificity in his statements demonstrate a level of eSports savvy and respect that is surely uncommon. Not surprisingly, very few people in the US understand eSports on any level. We are super excited to see how this Celtics team pans out. Kudos to Wyc Grousbeck and his team for having the vision and foresight to make a decisive commitment. I love the way they rebuilt the team in Boston, I thought they made some great decisions. This is another example of intelligent leadership. There will be cool stuff from the Celtics in 2018.
