The eSports industry is growing exponentially and will soon be a billion dollar industry. The announcement of the NBA 2K eLeague slated to debut in 2018 proves that the big boys are starting to recognize the potential in eSports. The NBA’s eSports basketball league is a huge opportunity for brands and early movers will reap the rewards.
Expect significant promotion centering around NBA games and events in 2018. Several NBA teams like the Miami Heat and the Philadelphia 76ers have already made investments in eSports teams so I think it’s safe to say the NBA franchises are on board. The NFL, NHL, MLB and other US professional sports leagues will follow suit… it’s just a matter of time.
The eSports game is largely untapped from an advertising and marketing perspective but that will change soon. We expect that a few of the brands that have already played in the eSports space (Coca-Cola, Buffalo Wild Wings, Bud Light, Gillette, etc.) will strike some deals with the NBA 2K eLeague but it will be interesting to see which brands take center stage.
